A Thriving Community of Filipinos in Japan

The Vibrant Filipino Community in Japan

In recent years, while Japan’s population continues to fall, the Filipino community in Japan has been steadily growing. There is an increasing number of Filipinos making Japan their second home. As per latest available statistics, the Filipino community in Japan reached a substantial population of 298,740 in December 2022, the fourth-largest foreign community in the country. This phenomenon can be attributed to various factors, including employment opportunities, cultural exchange, educational pursuits, and family members of Filipinos who are already living in Japan.

The Filipino Diaspora

The Philippines is known for its rich culture, stunning landscapes, and warm-hearted people. However, economic challenges and limited opportunities have led many Filipinos to seek employment abroad. Japan became an attractive destination to work for Filipinos because of its robust economy. The number of Filipinos in Japan increased substantially beginning in the 1980s. Most of them came to Japan as Overseas Performing Artists (OPA), who worked in the entertainment industry as singers and dancers. During this time, intermarriage between Filipinos and Japanese citizens became increasingly common.

Another significant influx of Filipinos in Japan began when Japan implemented its Technical Intern Training Program (TITP) in 1993. Under this program, Filipinos were employed to fill labor shortages in various industries such as agriculture, manufacturing, and healthcare.
