Bananas Filipino Bistro: A Taste of Home in Tokyo

My First Visit to Bananas Filipino Bistro

There are moments when food becomes more than just a meal—it becomes a bridge to memories, family, and a place you still call home. That’s exactly what I felt on my first visit to Bananas Filipino Bistro in Shinjuku, Tokyo.
After strolling around Tokyo with my family, soaking in the city lights and energy, we wanted to spend our last few hours in Tokyo before heading back to Niigata in the best way possible. And honestly, what better way is there than enjoying Filipino food in the heart of Tokyo?

Chicken Adobo That Hits the Soul

The moment the chicken adobo landed on the table, the aroma alone was enough to make me pause. Rich, savory, and perfectly balanced between soy sauce and vinegar, every bite tasted like it had been simmered with patience and love. It wasn’t just food—it was comfort. The kind that reminds you of Sunday lunches and family gatherings back home.

Crispy Pork Lumpia, Gone in Seconds

Next came the pork lumpia, golden and crackling with every bite. Crisp on the outside, juicy and flavorful on the inside, it was impossible to eat just one. This is the kind of lumpia that disappears fast at any handaan—and true enough, it vanished from our table just as quickly.

Tortang Talong, My All-Time Favorite

Then there was my personal favorite: tortang talong. Smoky grilled eggplant, soft and tender, coated in fluffy egg and fried just right. One bite and I was instantly transported back to simple meals at home—no frills, just pure Filipino goodness. This dish alone is worth coming back for.

Fried Chicken, Max’s-Style Nostalgia

The fried chicken, reminiscent of Max’s, brought another wave of nostalgia. Crispy skin, juicy meat, and that unmistakable Filipino-style seasoning. It’s the kind of fried chicken that doesn’t need explaining—it speaks for itself.

Garlic Fried Rice: The Perfect Partner

All these dishes were perfectly matched with garlic fried rice—fragrant, slightly crispy, and packed with that toasted garlic aroma. Every spoonful elevated the dishes, making each bite more satisfying than the last.

Red Horse Beer & Memories of Home

To complete my own version of a Filipino-style feast, I sipped on Red Horse Beer. Not for its kick, but for what it represents. Each sip brought back memories of fiestas, late-night kwentuhan, and celebrations that stretch until morning. Sometimes, taste is all it takes to bring memories rushing back.

Sweet Endings: Halo-Halo & Turon

Just when I thought it couldn’t get any better, dessert arrived. The halo-halo was refreshing and colorful, layered with flavors that reminded me of scorching summer days during my high school years. Paired with warm, crispy turon, it was the perfect ending—sweet, nostalgic, and deeply Filipino.
