A Taste of Home: Filipino Flavors at Hard Rock Cafe Roppongi

Filipino cuisine is making waves in Japan, thanks to a flavorful collaboration between the Philippine Department of Tourism in Tokyo and Hard Rock Cafe Roppongi. In a warm and vibrant lunch meeting, I got to experience this cultural and culinary celebration firsthand, one delicious bite at a time.

A Taste of Home: Filipino Flavors at Hard Rock Cafe Roppongi

A Warm Welcome by the DOT Tokyo Team

At exactly 11:30 am of May 27th, I was greeted outside Hard Rock Cafe Roppongi by the ever-welcoming Ms. Jennifer and Ms. Chie Che from the Department of Tourism Tokyo. After a short and friendly introduction, they led me inside the iconic restaurant, where we settled at a cozy table and quickly dove into engaging conversation and, of course, food.

Spotlight on the Mega-Fam Tour: Japan Meets the Philippines

While waiting for our first dish, we talked about the DOT’s ongoing projects in Japan. One that particularly piqued my interest was the largest mega-fam tour, where 120 Japanese influencers visited various Philippine destinations and shared their experiences online—an exciting and impactful way of promoting tourism between the two nations.

Pork Sisig Nachos: Where Filipino and Mexican Flavors Meet

Soon, the first dish arrived—Pork Sisig Nachos. Despite my nerves, I dove in at Ms. Jen’s encouragement and was instantly transported back to the Philippines with the first bite. The jalapeño heat paired with the nostalgic taste of sisig brought memories of mall food courts and sizzling plates. Embarrassingly, I forgot proper table etiquette and dove right into the shared plate, but laughter and good vibes filled the air as we all dug in together.

Lechon Kawali: Served Two Ways, All Filipino

Next came the Lechon Kawali on Rice and the Lechon Kawali Burger. The burger, a fusion of crispy pork belly and beef patty, was unexpectedly amazing—especially with a splash of sawsawan on top. The Lechon Kawali on Rice, on the other hand, felt 100% authentic, complete with garlic rice, Asian side veggies, and the perfect crunch that every Filipino craves.

Talking Tourism and Alan Shirahama

As we continued eating, the topic turned to Alan Shirahama—Philippine tourism ambassador, performer, and proud Filipino-Japanese talent. A member of the dance group Generations from Exile Tribe, Alan is a cultural bridge who helps promote the Philippines in Japan. Inspired by his efforts, I knew I wanted to write more about his impact.

Banana Cue & Ice Cream: A Sweet Ending with Street Food Vibes

Just when I thought I couldn’t eat more, dessert arrived—Banana Cue with Ice Cream. It was classic Filipino street food elevated with a classy twist. The taste instantly reminded me of the sweet, caramelized bananas sold by street vendors back home—only this time topped with creamy ice cream for that extra indulgence.

More Than a Meal: Gifts, Culture, and Legacy

Before leaving, I was given beaded necklaces and a pouch bag—charming tokens of Filipino warmth. Ms. Jen shared that the chefs took inspiration from Kulinarya: A Guidebook to Philippine Cuisine by Glenda Rosales Barreto, explaining the authenticity behind each dish. Also exciting was the news that Inasal Chicken, another Filipino favorite, has earned a permanent spot on the Roppongi menu.

A Memorable Farewell

As we wrapped up and parted ways, I carried with me not only a full stomach but also a full heart. Filipino cuisine, hospitality, and culture had found a joyful space in the heart of Tokyo—and I couldn’t be more proud.
