World-class Chocolates From the Philippines on the Rise

When asked, "What Omiyage (お土産 - the Japanese for souvenir) one can give and be proud of to family and friends here in Japan from the Philippines as Pasalubong?", the usual recommendation would be dried mango, polvoron and/or banana chips. Now, with the growing popularity of world-class chocolate products from the Philippines, surely TSOKOLATE is an addition to the list.

In recent years, high-quality raw cacao production has flourished in southern Davao region, which accounts for about 80% of commercial cacao production in the Philippines. With support from the Philippine government and entrepreneurs, more local farmers are encouraged to plant cacao.

Theo & Philo is another local brand that offers unique flavor combinations of chocolate never heard of or imagined before, like chocolate with calamansi or milk chocolate adobo.

With continued success and development of the cacao industry in the country, it isn’t far-fetched to think of the idea that any of the local brands would be regularly sold in “konbini” and supermarkets nationwide in Japan in the near future.
